Low-tech spectroscopy for wearable environment sensors

With the tails, I’m especially interested in sensing pollution in the environment. I’ve looked into commercially available sensors like VOC sensors, and they seem to use high amounts of current and are not necessarily particularly reliable for the cause. It seems that I could get very far working with IR transmitters and receivers through a medium– sensing particles in the air and using lime water to sense C02 levels. I’m looking more into how to sense other things like N02, CO other common gas combustion by products.
